What is AVID?

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college preparatory elective class designed to support students that are academically in the middle with the rigors of middle and high school who have the goal of admittance to a 4-year college or university. The AVID program consists of three main components: tutorials, AVID curriculum (WICOR), and organization.

Tutorials

Trained college tutors lead tutorial sessions twice each week in AVID classes. Tutors are excellent role models of motivated, organized, and successful college students. During each tutorial session, students come prepared with a question that they need assistance answering. In a small group setting, the tutor’s role is to guide the students as they assist one another. Tutorials help students who are enrolled in rigorous coursework keep up and succeed in their course while deepening their understanding.
